Leak Sensors vs. Whole-Property Water Monitoring

Point sensors and whole-property monitors both help with water risk, but they watch different things.

Some shopping links may earn us a commission. We have not independently lab-tested every product; this guide focuses on use-case fit, published specifications and practical limitations.

Point sensors watch a location

Put them where water is likely to appear: under sinks, beside water heaters, near pumps or in mechanical spaces. They are inexpensive and easy to expand.

Meter monitoring watches flow

A whole-property monitor can flag unexpected water use even when no sensor happens to be sitting where the leak surfaces.

Use layers for higher-risk properties

Physical inspection, point sensors and flow monitoring can complement one another. None guarantees that every leak will be detected early.

Bottom line

Buy the smallest tool that answers the question you actually have. If the result affects life safety, structural work, electrical work, gas, fire protection or regulated building systems, treat the tool as screening equipment — not as a substitute for the qualified professional or required inspection.
